Making Friends in Your 40s: Why Is It So Much Harder?

Making Friends in Your 40s: Why Is It So Much Harder?

Making friends in your 40s can feel surprisingly difficult.

And the strange thing is, it's usually not because you've suddenly become less sociable.

It's because life has got busy.

Work.

Family.

Relationships.

Children.

Parents.

Responsibilities.

Everyone has somewhere to be.

And suddenly those easy friendships you made when you were younger don't happen quite so naturally anymore.

It's not that you don't have friends

This is something I hear a lot.

You can have friends and still want more connection.

You can love your existing friends but realise you don't see them nearly as much as you'd like.

You can be happily married and still want a bigger social life.

You can be single and absolutely not be looking for a relationship.

You can have a busy life and still think:

“I'd really like to meet some new people.”

And there's nothing strange about that.

So how do you actually make new friends after 40?

You have to start putting yourself in situations where meeting people can happen.

And I don't mean walking up to a stranger and announcing:

“Hi, I'm looking for a new friend.”

Thankfully!

It's much more natural than that.

Go for a walk with a group.

Try padel.

Book an experience.

Go for dinner.

Join a social community.

Try something you've always fancied doing.

The activity gives you a reason to be there.

The conversations happen naturally.

And sometimes, you meet someone you genuinely click with.

Stop waiting for your social life to happen

This is probably the biggest change.

When we're younger, friendship often happens around us.

As we get older, sometimes we have to be a little more intentional.

That doesn't mean forcing friendships.

It just means creating more opportunities for them.

Because if every weekend looks the same, you're probably going to keep meeting the same people.

Sometimes you need to change the scenery.

This is exactly why Next Chapter Society exists

I didn't want to create another traditional social group.

I wanted to create somewhere for people who simply think:

“I want more.”

More experiences.

More people.

More laughter.

More things in the diary.

More reasons to get dressed up and leave the house.

And maybe, along the way, you make a few new friends too.

You don't have to arrive knowing anyone.

You don't have to be single.

You don't have to be lonely.

You don't even have to be particularly sociable.

Just be open to your next chapter.

Your 40s aren't too late for new friendships

If anything, this could be the perfect time to meet people who are more aligned with who you are now.

You're not the person you were at 25.

And you don't need your social life to look like it did then either.

You get to build something new.
