How to Build a Social Life After 40 — Without Starting From Scratch

How to Build a Social Life After 40 — Without Starting From Scratch

Your 40s can be a funny old time.

You've probably got work, family, responsibilities, a house to run, a diary that somehow fills itself...

And yet, you can sometimes look around and think:

“When did my social life become so much smaller?”

It's not necessarily that you've lost your friends.

You might have plenty.

It's just that everyone's lives have changed.

People are busy.
Plans get cancelled.
Work takes over.
Kids need you.
Relationships change.

And suddenly you're craving more.

More nights out.

More laughter.

More people to do things with.

More things in the diary to actually look forward to.

Making friends after 40 is different

Let's be honest.

Making friends was much easier when we were younger.

School.

University.

Work.

Clubs.

Children's activities.

You were constantly thrown together with people.

As an adult, you have to be a little more intentional about it.

And that can feel awkward.

“How do I actually meet new people now?”

The good news?

You absolutely can.

And you don't need to reinvent yourself to do it.

Making new friends and enjoying your social life after 40.

You don't have to go looking for a best friend

I think we put far too much pressure on friendship.

You don't have to walk into a room and immediately find your new best friend.

Sometimes it's much simpler than that.

Go somewhere you've never been.

Try something new.

Say yes to an invitation.

Join a group.

Book an experience.

Have a conversation with someone you wouldn't normally meet.

Come for the experience. Meet people along the way.

That's often how friendships actually happen.

Your social life doesn't have to look like it did at 25

And why should it?

Maybe you're not interested in staying out until 3am anymore.

Maybe you are.

Maybe you love dinner parties.

Maybe you'd rather go for a walk and have coffee.

Maybe you want weekends away, wellness experiences, live music, new restaurants or simply an excuse to get dressed up and go somewhere.

There isn't a rule book.

Your next chapter gets to look however you want it to look.

Friends over 40 playing padel together and enjoying a social activity

This is why I created Next Chapter Society

I didn't want to create another traditional “social group”.

There are plenty of those.

I wanted something that reflected real life after 40.

A place where you can meet people, discover new experiences, get out of your routine and have something in the diary that you're genuinely excited about.

You might come on your own.

You might come with a friend.

You might be single.

You might be married.

You might have children.

You might have a completely full social life already.

It doesn't matter.

Next Chapter isn't about fixing your life.

It's about adding to it.

Maybe your next chapter needs a little more fun

Sometimes we don't need a complete life overhaul.

We just need to start saying yes again.

Yes to going somewhere new.

Yes to meeting someone new.

Yes to trying something you've never done.

Yes to putting something in the diary just because it sounds fun.

Because your 40s, 50s and beyond aren't the years where life gets smaller.

They can be the years where it gets bigger.

You just have to decide what you want your next chapter to look like.
